Overview
Educate My Kid is a web-based interactive fiction game. This game works with an interactive storytelling script and allows players to make choices during the gameplay process. By interacting with the narrative and the non-player character via the dialogue, players immerse themselves in Jonathan’s perspective to explore several ways to enhance his son’s learning experience, allowing players to freely decide the best way to educate the child.
You play as Jonathan, Dan’s father. Your son is in grade 10 and has poor academic performance at school. Therefore, the game begins with a short introduction scene about Jonathan having a meeting with Dan’s teacher to discuss how Dan is doing at school. Dan’s teacher has suggested that Jonathan consider using external resources apart from school materials to motivate Dan to be proactive in learning.
Main Goals:
- To promote the merits of educational video games and convince the player to leverage this method to improve their child’s learning behaviour, such as become more proactive in studying or better absorb the material from a specific subject.
- To explore the different perspectives on the advantages and disadvantages of traditional learning and educational games.
Process: Discover, Define, Design, and Deliver
After I have confirmed the topic of my game, first I came up with the research question and conducted a literature review. By reading the literature, I obtained much useful information about how gamification can facilitate students’ learning. Then I jumped right into the ideation phase. In the ideation phase, I created the game document, drawn the logic flowchart and wrote out the screenplays. I spent more than 1.5 months to complete this phase. After finished the scripts, I jumped into the coding process and I used inkle’s ink to write the markup language. Later on, I created the graphics and wrote HTML and CSS to establish the interface of the game.
Design Problems:
People had various opinions on educational methods
Since student learning difficulty has challenged educators and parents, many studies have attempted to find out how to enhance student learning performance and motivation. Many scholars suggest parents and schools incorporate educational video games to motivate and improve their children’s learning experiences.
Many discussions questioning the effectiveness of educational video games, in which the debates surround the
negative aspects of playing games. Indeed, some parents believe that traditional learning methods are the best for children to learn effectively.
Characters:
4 characters in this game – a player and 3 NPCs

Graphic Design:
I have drawn more than 30 graphics and insert them into the game. I believed that provide virtual graphics can enhance user interest and achieve a strong level of immersion.
